National NAIDOC Week 2024

For a second year in a row, Kmart and Target are proud to have been named the official National NAIDOC Week poster distribution partner with the National NAIDOC Committee. National NAIDOC Week 2024 will be held from Sunday 7 July to Sunday 14 July.

In the third year of our NAIDOC Week Art Competition, we had some amazing submissions from our First Nations team members.

Kmart Deadly Stores will feature window displays of the Official NAIDOC Week poster artwork, alongside our very own team member’s artwork and story.

This year we celebrate Natalie McKeon from Kmart Kardinya. See their artwork and story below

Natalie McKeon – Kmart Kardinya

Natalie's artwork is inspired by the unique behaviour of Firehawks, Black Kites, Whistling Kites and Brown Falcons, which use burning branches from bushfires to start new fires, helping them flush out prey. This remarkable use of fire as a survival tool is akin to what Natalie’s ancestors did when they burned Country for hunting, land renewal, preventing destructive wildfires.

This piece symbolises the need to preserve culture and traditional knowledge, sharing it with new generations and non-Indigenous people, to ignite a passion for storytelling and rejuvenate hope in building stronger communities.

Kmart and Target are proud to be appointed by National NAIDOC Committee as the Official National NAIDOC Week Poster Distribution Partner for 2024.

This year’s National NAIDOC Week Poster features artwork by Deborah Belyea, proud member of the Samuawgadhalgal, Cassowary Clan, whose bloodlines stretch to the people of the top Western Torres Strait islands of Saibai, Dauan, and the Bamaga-Saibai community of Cape York. Titled ‘Urapun Muy’, Deborah Belyea’s artwork is a heart-warming piece that pays tribute to First Nations culture, while the fire represents the sharing of cultural knowledge from one generation to the next, aligning to this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’.

This partnership will see National NAIDOC Week Posters distributed to customers free of charge at all Kmart and K hub stores across the Country from early June 2024.

This year’s artwork by Deborah Belyea will be on display in the windows of Kmart and K hub Deadly stores in celebration of NAIDOC Week. To read more about our Deadly Stores click here
