Eliminating single-use plastic bags

We have removed single-use plastic shopping bags from all our stores

To help reduce the number of plastic bags that end up in landfill each year we have removed single-use plastic shopping bags from all our stores across Australia and New Zealand.

We encourage our customers to bring their own bags whenever they visit our stores across Australia. We will also offer reusable shopping bags for purchase.

These changes, along with in-store marketing and team member training, have reduced the number of plastic shopping bags issued to customers by 80 per cent.

Reusable shopping bags:

All our stores now offer customers reusable plastic bags, made with 80 per cent recycled material. To encourage customers to change their behaviour and reuse bags when shopping, Kmart charges 15 cents for medium-sized reusable bags and 30 cents for a larger version in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The government has banned the supply of all lightweight plastic bags in the Northern Territory, Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Australian Capital Territory. This ban applies to all retailers. The ban is designed to help protect the environment and wildlife by reducing the litter of and damage caused by single-use plastic bags.

Due to the government’s ban, we encourage our customers to bring their own bags whenever they visit Kmart across Australia. Alternatively, we sell a range of reusable bags starting from 15 cents. These are designed for multiple use.

There has been considerable research into biodegradable plastics and studies suggest that they do not break down quickly, they break up into small pieces and can impact marine life and cause plastic pollution. Biodegradable bags have also been banned in some states as a result. Paper bags are not considered as a reusable alternative as they can tear and crush easily. The manufacturing process of paper bags is also high in energy and water consumption, making it a greater impact on the environment.

Customers are welcome to carry items out of the store, or place them back into a trolley without a bag. There is no obligation to buy or use a bag. We may still ask to see your receipt as you exit the store regardless of whether the items are bagged.
